Exploring the timeless wisdom of Shri Ram: What can we learn from his life?

Malati Prabhakar

The Ramayana portrays Rama as Vishnu's seventh incarnation, born to King Dasharatha and Queen Kaushalya in Ayodhya. Rama is recognised for his persistent devotion to dharma (duty and righteousness) and is frequently depicted as a model king, spouse, and son.

Lessons we learn from the life of Shri Ram:

  1. Despite being valiant and virtuous, affluent and influential, and, the very incarnation of the almighty, every soul that is birthed has to endure its karmic journey of trials and tribulations. The only solution to such trials is faith, patience, and discipline. Discipline is indeed destiny.

  2. This roller coaster ride called life will be more fortunate provided you are amenable to your parents, siblings, mentors, and the creator. Despite adapting to everyone's demands, you will face unfair hardships from the envious Mantharas and Kaikeyis in your lives. Circumvent such people in your journey.

  3. The more charming, righteous, and benevolent you are, you will attract more suitors. Upon being spurned, these lustful Shurpanakas can instigate even the intellectually gifted and all-powerful to battle for their merry chase. Avoid these one-sided lovers like the plague.

  4. Ravana is unfortunately ill-informed by Akampana that, if Sita is separated from lord Rama, he will not be able to survive. Shurpanaka further adds fuel by reminding Ravana, of his duty to protect his kinsmen and kingdom. Enraged by unrestrained forcefulness, Ravana sets off to abduct Sita without assessing the mightiness of lord Ram. Never underestimate your arch-nemesis.

  5. The mimicking golden deer and the imposter ascetic will be ubiquitous in our habitats in the form of temptations and impulses Professionally, the gleaming fawn can be an abrupt resolution to invest in a dummy corporation or a knockoff brand or a shell company or a shimmering chalcopyrite that only glitters like gold but in reality, is a red herring. Decisions to be made in uncertain times and anxious moments have to be made with proper investigation, deliberation, and self-control.

  6. Rage can blind even the most eminent supreme leader. While Valli has successfully killed Mayavi after a grueling battle, he misinterprets Sugreev's intent to block the cave with a huge boulder as an act of treachery to usurp the throne. Anger, fury, wrath, ire, and indignation not only lead to the disintegration of personal relationships but also to deterioration in our vocations. Even the great Ravana in rage resorts to abducting the noble lady because of the rage, greed, and then, lust which leads to his destruction despite being abundantly blessed by lord Bramha. Surely, the doors to hell are anger, lust, and greed. Wisdom lies in consulting the insightful Vibeeshnas, faithful Taras and Mandodaris, or even, the reformed Mareechas in our lives before engaging in unmerited conflicts.

  7. A vow made by you should be kept up and fulfilled at the promised moment else the favor is not returned. Even Gods like Shri Ram can be infuriated by the delays in executing promised pledges as in the case of the enthroned Sugreev. Of course, Sugreev realizes his folly and even compensates by being a jewel among Vanaras against the rakshashas. Promise only what you can fulfill.

  8. There will be a handful of Hanumans, Angads, and Sampatis in our lives, who will spread their wings to protect us and get scorched or wounded for safeguarding our interests. Respect, cherish, and celebrate such harmonious relationships.

  9. After being abducted and threatened to be killed by Ravana, if she denied becoming his chief consort, Sita displays unswerving loyalty to Shri Ram even in her thoughts. She even undertakes agni pariksha for having made that one mistake of transgressing the 'Lakshman Rekha.' But, to the idle tongue-wagging, gossipmongers of Ayodhya, casting aspersions on her character was akin to their skin. This leads even the Vishnu incarnate to let go of his prized possession. Steer clear of the myriads of such chronic busybodies in your personal and professional lives.

While there are so many more lessons that can be learned from the life of Shri Rama, the key takeaways would be to live life with austerity, humility, and respect for all living beings. Stay away from greedy, angry, lustful gossipy people.
